Eleven CL players land on First Team
Eleven members of the Clear Lake High School football team received First Team honors in Class 2A District 2 balloting by coaches conducted last week.
The Lions, who finished the 2014 season 10-1, were represented by five players on the First Team Offense and five on the First Team defense. The Lions also had a player honored on the Utility list.
Two Lions players were also named “Most Valuable” in their positions. Senior Zach Zwiefel was chosen as Most Valuable Lineman; senior Chandler Diercks was touted as Most Valuable Defensive Player. With a nod to his versatility, District 2 coaches also named Diercks to the First Team Offense as a running back.
Diercks averaged 9.5 yards per carry during the season, running 77 times for 731-yards. He scored six touchdowns; his longest was a 65-yard run. The speedy Diercks was also a favorite target for quarterback Brock Adams. He had 21 receptions for 285-yards, including a 77-yard TD reception. He scored three times on passes. In total, Diercks provided 1,016-yards of offense for the Lions. Diercks was also a punter for the team, averaging 38.6-yards per kick, with a longest of 54-yards. He was even better on the receiving end of kicks, returning seven kick-offs for 290-yards, an average of 41.4-yards per return. He returned one kickoff 94-yards for a touchdown. He returned 11 punts an average of 30.5-yards and scored three TDs on punt returns, his longest was 76-yards.
On defense, Diercks had 17 solo tackles and 10 assists. He also had two interceptions and a fumble recovery.
Zwiefel recorded 11 solo and a total of 44.5 tackles. His line included two solo tackles for loss and two solo sacks. Zwiefel also had a fumble recovery for the team.
Zwiefel was joined as an Interior Defensive Lineman on the First Team Defense by senior Mitch Keeran.
Tim Franken, a senior, and Justin Sholly, a junior, were picked as Outside Linebackers/Defensive Ends. Franken finished the season with seven solo and 25 assisted tackles, including one solo tackle for a loss and a solo sack. Keeran made 14 solo and 30 assisted tackles in 11 games. He was credited with eight solo tackles for loss and three solo sacks. He recovered two fumbles.
