Diercks signs with ISU
Clear Lake High School’s Chandler Diercks has signed a letter of intent to attend Iowa State University in the fall and compete on the Cyclones’ track team. The two-time state long jump champion and Drake Relays champion said he will compete in the long jump and may try the triple jump event.
Diercks set a Class 3A State Track Meet record with a leap of 23’ 4.25” in May. His jump of 23 feet, 10 inches won a Drake Relays title in April and set a school record. Besides his two state titles, he finished second as a freshman and also was second as a sophomore at the Drake Relays.
Diercks said he also considered the University of Iowa, Northern Iowa University and North Carolina, but chose Iowa State because he liked the coaching staff and “felt like they needed me the most.” He said he felt a lot of pressure in making his choice, but called becoming a Division I athlete “a great feeling.”
His goal this spring is to stay healthy and continue to build upon his track legacy at CLHS. He said ISU coaches have high goals for him once he reaches Ames. “They think I can do something special in four years,” he said.
