Partnership ignites creative spirit in local artist

Since June 2014, the kiln in Walker 3-D Studio at the Clear Lake Arts Center has been working overtime.  A partnership with Steve and Marilyn Johnson allowed the Arts Center to have an Artist-in-Residence program.  The artist, Alec Heggen a 2014 graduate of Clear Lake High School, worked a minimum of three mornings a week for eight weeks and the public was invited to watch.

In any other part of the world, this would be the end of a pretty good story.  But not in Clear Lake, Iowa and especially not at the Clear Lake Arts Center, where the members and volunteers seem to always take something that’s ‘pretty good’ and make it great.

“I asked Steve to oversee Alec’s first firing.  Steve had been involved with the design and construction of the studio, so I figured he was a good go-to person,” said Paula Chenchar Hanus, the Center’s executive director.  “So on Alec’s first day, Steve showed up, and he’s been showing up ever since.”

Johnson began mentoring the young artist, and the creative spirit was ignited.
