Norman J. Ballantyne

Norman J. “Bill” Ballantyne, 91, of Clear Lake, died Sunday, Oct. 12, 2014, with his family by his side at the Oakwood Care Center, Clear Lake.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m., Friday, Oct. 17, 2014, at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, with Rev. Dennis Ganz officiating.  Burial will be in Clear Lake Cemetery.  Family will greet friends one hour before the service.  The family suggests memorials to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Bill was born Sept. 18, 1923, on the family farm north of Ventura, the son of George and Dora (Ebaugh) Ballantyne.  He attended school in Ventura.

He worked at Mason City Warehouse in Mason City, Iowa.  Bill married Irene Mae Odom on April 1, 1945, in Mason City.  In 1951 he started farming north of Ventura and continued to farm until he retired in 1975.  He then moved to their present home in Clear Lake.

Bill enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and the winters in Arizona after he retired.  He especially enjoyed being with his morning coffee friends at the Pro Sandwich Shop in Mason City.  He was a member of Ventura United Methodist Church until it closed.

Bill is survived by his wife, Irene Ballantyne, Clear Lake; two children, Karen (Gene) Frahm, Apache Jct., Az., and Alan Jay (Sharla) Ballantyne, Mesa, Az.; six grandchildren, Sara Frahm, Matt Frahm, Mindy Frahm, Brittany Ballantyne, Erin Ballantyne and Ryan Ballantyne; two great grandchildren, Chase and Everett Frahm; brother, Robert (Ethel) Ballantyne, Mason City; sisters, Beverly (Gene) Tindall, Tahlequah, Okla., and Sharon Barnes, Chillicothe, Ms.; sisters-in-law, June Ballantyne, Clear Lake, and Jaunice (Jack) Bull, Mason City; brother-in-law, Virgil Ouverson, Fertile, Iowa; and nieces and nephews.  

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Stanley, Darrell and Gary Ballantyne; and a sister, Ruth Ouverson.  

He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Wark-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel was in charge of arrangements.
