GHV boys finish as runner-up at Humboldt X-C meet
The Garner-Hayfield/Ventura cross country teams have been competing against some of the best individuals and teams in the state and also nationally, and they’ve been doing well. The boys and girls teams competed in Humboldt and at the University of Minnesota last week.
Humboldt Meet
On Monday, Sept. 22, the GHV teams competed at Humboldt, which has one of the more difficult courses they will see this year. The boys team finished as runner-up behind Algona, which boasts a ranked 3A program. The GHV/WH girls team finished in seventh place.
The boys finished in second place with 106 points, behind Algona who won the meet with 42 points. Mason City was third with 122 points and Eagle Grove was fourth with 155 points. Twenty teams competed in the boys race.
Chase Smith won the individual race at Algona with a time of 17:00. Logan Dalbeck was second on the GHV team and 18th overall with a time of 18:22. Rounding out the GHV runners was Derek Brown, 24th, 18:41; Ray Cataldo, 35th, 18:59; Austin Siegrist, 31st, 18:50; Johnathon O’Connor, 45th, 19:20; and Andrew Schreur, 70th, 20:01.
“Our girls also ran well behind a handful of top ranked teams and they continue to improve each and every meet, which is all we can ask for,” said Coach Eric Jolivette.
Eighteen teams competed in the girls race. Pocahontas won the meet with 44 points. Humboldt was second with 91 points and Emmetsburg was third with 119 points. GHV/WH finished in seventh place with 210 points.
Maria Gonzalez finished in the top 10 with a seventh place finish in 16:57. Also running varsity was Tiara Van Gerpen, 28th, 17:43; Kaylee Hudspeth, 44th, 18:29; Rebekah Larson, 64th, 19:13; Morgan Graham, 72nd, 19:19; Taylor Vossberg, 89th, 20:22; and Angela O’Hara, 106th, 20:59.
“Once our team starts to believe they can run with the top individuals from other programs, then we will see some amazing things begin to happen,” said Jolivette.
