Three Cardinals earn post-season honors
Three Garner-Hayfield/Ventura softball players were named to the North Iowa Conference All-Conference teams.
Senior Maddie Tusha was named to the NIC’s First Team. Junior Tiara Van Gerpen was named to the NIC Second Team, while Mallory Van Oort earned Honorable Mention recognition.
Tusha was the leading player for the Cardinals this season. For the season, she tallied 32 hits, four of them being doubles and she hit one triple. Tusha finished second in the state in all classes with 60 stolen bases. She committed only three errors during the season as GHV’s center fielder.
“Maddie is one of those rare, young ladies that every coach hopes to have an opportunity to work with. When your best players are your hardest workers and your lone senior is the first one to grab equipment it sets an outstanding tone for the attitude of the team and that’s what Maddie has been for us,” said Coach Christi Weiser.
Van Gerpen collected 30 hits for the season and tallied up 38 stolen bases. As the team’s shortstop, Van Gerpen led the team in assist with 32.
“Tiara had her struggles at times this year, but you couldn’t ask for a better teammate or more accountable kid to coach,” said Weiser. She hit over .400 this season, which is tremendous, because she only learned to hit left handed this season. It’s going to be scary to see what she is able to accomplish offensively with some practice time under her belt.”
Van Oort led the conference in RBIs with 35. She connected on 29 hits, three of them being doubles. Van Oort also played solid defense as the - Read More Via e-Edition
