Cards fall in opening round of Districts

The Garner-Hayfield/Ventura baseball team went 1-3 for the week, moving their record to 8-19 as they headed into District play.

Forest City 7, GHV 2
GHV 2, Osage 1
 GHV hosted a doubleheader on Monday, July 7, with visiting teams Forest City and Osage. Forest City topped the Cardinals, 7-2, but GHV picked up a 2-1 win over Osage.

  Connecting at the plate wasn’t the problem for the Cardinals against Forest City. GHV connected on nine hits. The problem came with trying to get the runners across the plate. Jake Wolf and Cade Baker scored GHV’s two runs, knocked in on hits by Spencer Shaw and Jim Ermer.
 Braden Meints, Holden Hutcheson and Shaw each collected two hits, while Alex Goll, Wolf and Baker each hit a single.
 Josh Theobald took the loss on the mound for the Cardinals, pitching three innings. He struck out five, walked two and allowed three hits and two runs. Payton James pitched four innings. He struck out one, walked two, gave up seven hits and allowed five runs.
 The Cardinals pulled off a close 2-1 victory over Osage in 11 innings.
The Green Devils scored in the first inning, but that was it for the remainder of the game. The Cardinals knotted the score, at 1-1 in the seventh and scored the winning run in the 11th inning.
James was the winning pitcher. He pitched two innings, striking out one, walking three and giving up one hit. Shaw saw the majority of the time on the mound, pitching nine innings. He struck-out seven, walked seven and gave up six hits and one run.
Meints had a spectacular night at the plate, connecting on a double and his third homerun of the season.
Ermer also had a good night, connecting on two singles. Alek Goll, Hutcheson and Nick Joynt each connected on one single.
One of Ermer’s hits brought in Meints for a run. Meints’ homerun allowed Baker to score the other Cardinal run.

Central Springs 10, GHV 5
The Cardinals traveled to Central Springs on Tuesday, July 8, for the final game of the regular season. The Panthers collected 12 hits, compared to GHV’s six, and managed a 10-5 victory over the Cards.
Holden Hutcheson took the loss for the Cardinals. He walked four, gave up four hits and allowed five runs. Jake Wolf pitched 5.33 innings. He struck out two, walked four, gave up eight hits and allowed five runs.
Spencer Shaw led the offense with two hits. Jim Ermer, Payton James, Cade Baker and Harley Forry had one hit apiece.
James, Baker and Shaw all recorded RBIs.
Ermer scored two of the Cardinal’s five runs, while Hutcheon, - Read More Via e-Edition
