CL softball team ends regular season with a win over Clarion-Goldfield

The Clear Lake girls ended the regular season on a high note Thursday, July 3. They topped Clarion-Goldfield, 10-9, to enter post-season play Tuesday night, July 8, with a 4-22 record. They finished with a North Central Conference record of 3-13.

Newman 12, CL 0

 Newman scored seven runs in the second and finished the game with five runs in the fourth in a 12-0 win over Clear Lake Tuesday, July 1.
The number 11 (1A) Knights took advantage of Lion errors. Just two of their 12 runs were earned.
Reagan Brackey took the loss on the mound. She gave up six hits, walked five and struck out two.
Tori Fyfe had Clear Lake’s only hit in the game.

St. Ed’s 8, CL 3
A three-run sixth inning broke open a tight game against St. Ed’s on Wednesday, July 2.
The Gaels, raked sixth in Class 2A, jumped out to a 4-0 lead after one inning, but the Lions came back with two in the second and one in the third to pull within 4-3.
Micheala Niles had two hits for the Lions. Tori Fyfe, Michala Ouverson, Carney Fraham and Chloe Mueller had one hit apiece. Lindsay Kearns was credited with two RBIs, while Katie Hewett had one.
Kirsten Baalson was the losing pitcher. The freshman threw four innings and gave up five hits, walked three and struck out two. Reagan Brackey pitched two innings, surrendering five hits. She walked three and struck out two.

Hampton-Dumont 6, CL 2
In their second outing of the day the Lions were involved in another close game. This time Hampton-Dumont won, 6-2.
Michaela Niles had another strong game, recording three hits in four trips to the plate. Tori Fyfe had a pair of hits, while Erin O’Tool and Chloe Mueller each had one.
The Lions scored their runs in the first and third innings. The two teams were tied at 2-2 before the Bulldogs plated three runs in the fifth and added an insurance run in the sixth to win, 6-2.

CL 10, Clarion-Goldfield 9 (8)
The Lions were again steady when they traveled to Clarion-Goldfield Thursday, July 3. This time they withstood a charge by their opponent to win in eight innings, 10-9.
The Lions were up, 1-0, after four innings and added two more runs in the top of the fifth for a 3-0 lead. But the Cowgirls stormed back with six runs in the bottom of the fifth to take the lead. They added two more in the sixth to make the score 7-3.
Five runs crossed home plate in the seventh inning to tie the score and send the game to extra innings. Clear Lake scored two in the top of the eighth, then stayed strong as the Cowgirls rallied. The rally fell short and the Lions got the exciting one-run win.
Michaela Niles continued to swing a hot bat, picking up four hits in five at-bats. Erin O’Tool, Tori Fyfe and Chloe Mueller each had two hits, each with a double. Michala Ouverson had one hit and contributed four RBIs. Fyfe finished with two RBIs and Mueller had one.
Reagan Brackey earned the win, pitching all eight innings. The Cowgirls scored their nine runs on nine hits. Brackey struck out one and walked none.
