GHV girls pick up some wins; top Clear Lake, 13-1

Coach Christina Weiser, coach of the Garner-Hayfield/Ventura softball team, felt like her team took positive strides this week, and is peaking at the right time. The Cardinals went 3-2 for the week moving their record to 7-14.

Newman 4, GHV 3
 The GHV softball team dropped a close one when Newman Catholic came to town on Monday, June 23. The Knights topped the Cardinals 4-3.
 GHV opened the game scoring runs in the first and second inning for a 2-0 lead. Newman scored one run in the fourth and three runs in the fifth, while holding the Cardinals to just one more run in the fifth for the final.

 “We started our week with a very competitive game with Newman. We were two plays from that score being 4-3 in our favor instead of their favor, but they came through when they needed to and we just came up short,” said Coach Weiser.
 Brooklyn Ossman pitched all seven innings for GHV. She struck-out one, walked four and gave up five hits. Newman’s Becca Huberty struck out 12 batters, walked three and gave up six hits.
 Maddie Tusha led the team on offense, recording one hit, two runs and tallying up four stolen bases. Tiara Van Gerpen also had a good night, getting two hits and recording three stolen bases. Grace Tusha recorded a double and Miranda Jackson had the only RBI for the Cardinals.

GHV 13, Clear Lake 1
 GHV pitcher Bailee Pitzenberger threw a one-hitter to help the Cardinals to a big, 13-1, victory over Clear Lake on Tuesday, June 24.
The Cardinals came out strong in the three inning showdown, scoring five runs in both the first and second innings and three in the third. Clear Lake scored their lone run in the third inning.
“Our game against Clear Lake was a great statement game for us,” said Coach Christina Weiser. “We found out the day before that we match up with Clear Lake in the first round of playoffs, so we knew it was important to come out and play well. We got very good performances from all three areas.”
GHV’s Maddie Tusha had a stellar night at the plate, collecting three hits, one being a double, three RBIs, three runs and three stolen bases. Mallory Van Oort also had a good night, connecting on two hits. She also had two RBIs, two stolen bases and two runs. Payton Bamrick and Mackenzie Van Gerpen had two hits apiece. Van Gerpen smacked a double and a triple that brought in two runners. One of Bamrick’s hits was a double and she recorded three RBIs.
Clear Lake’s Erin O’Tool was the lone Lion to connect on a single. Chloe Mueller, who was on base by error, scored on O’Tool’s hit.
Clear Lake freshman pitcher Kiersten Baalson, who is back after a long break, gave up 10 hits and walked three.
“The girls are picking up on the key points of the game and trying to make the smart plays,” said Clear Lake Coach Megan Young.
The Class 3A Region 2 first round game will be played Tuesday, July 8, at Garner. Game time is 7 p.m.

Lake Mills 8, GHV 1
It was a tougher night for the Cardinals when they traveled to Lake Mills on Wednesday, June 25, to take on the Bulldogs.
Lake Mills took an early lead, 7-0, at the end of the fourth inning. Both teams scored one run in the sixth inning for the final 8-1 Bulldog victory.
Lake Mills pitcher Emily Orban threw a great game, striking out five, walking none and giving up only four hits.
“They got a great pitching performance from Orban,” said Coach Christina Weiser. “We fought and played hard, but they were just a little better than us that day.”
GHV pitcher Brooklyn Ossman pitched the entire seven innings, striking out two, walking one and she gave up 12 hits.
