Clear Lake girls end week on a high note

The Clear Lake girls ended the week on a high note after picking up back-to-back wins. The team is now 3-19 heading into the home stretch of the season.

 “We are going to continue to fight and rally our hits. The girls are overcoming huge adversities and showing they are a team,” says Coach Megan Young. “We will finish the season playing Hampton-Dumont home on Wednesday (July

 2), Clarion-Goldfield Thursday and begin Regional playing against Garner-Hayfield-Ventura on July 8. Clear Lake’s schedule also included hosting St. Ed’s and Newman Catholic Monday and Tuesday, June 30 and July 1.

IF-A 12, CL 0
 With just one hit, the Lions didn’t have enough fire-power to try to keep with Iowa Falls-Alden on Monday, June 23. The Cadets plated 12 runs in three innings for a shut-out win.
 “This was a tough game to win with only one hit and seven errors,” said Coach Young. “Erin O’Tool stepped up and had the lone hit for us. This was a good game to get us motivated for the rest of the week.”
 Reagan Brackey was the losing pitcher. The Cadets used eight hits to score their 12 runs, six of which were earned. Brackey walked two.

GHV 13, CL 1 (3)

CL 3, Eagle Grove 1
 The Lions were provided with a good measure of just how much they have improved this season when they traveled to Eagle Grove Wednesday. In their first meeting on June 4 the Eagles dominated, 12-0. However, this time the Lions played a much more complete game and won, 3-1.
 “The girls have come a long way,” said Coach Young.
 Both teams were fighting hard and the score was tied 1-1 until the fifth inning.
 The Lions’ second win of the season was helped by Lexi Jones’ four hits, three of which were doubles.
“Jones has come a long way this season with her confidence and strength at the plate,” commented the coach.
Sara Buehler also had a double and Michaela Niles, Michala Ouverson and Carney Frahm each had singles for the Lions.
The girls only had one fielding error which also helped get the win. Eagle Grove committed five errors in the game.
Reagan Brackey pitched for the Lions and had three walks and one strikeout.
“It’s good for her to feel the pace of the game in her control,” said Young.

CL 10, Forest City 6
It was two wins in a row for the Lions, as they topped Forest City, 10-6, on Thursday, June 26.
“This was a great game for the girls to experience the lead, a team coming back, and to clinch the win,” said Coach Megan Young. “This was an adjustment at first to learning how to play on turf instead of grass. The girls had nine errors, but were able to make up for it. We are so proud of how far the girls have come.”
Michaela Niles led the team at the plate with three hits, one a double, and three RBIs. She also scored runs. Tori Fyfe and Chloe Mueller had two hits apiece, with one of Fyfe’s being a double. Erin O’Tool also smacked a double in the game. Lexi Jones and Katie Hewett each reached base on singles.
RBIs were credited to Niles, Fyfe, Jones, O’Tool, Michala Ouverson and Carney Frahm.
Reagan Brackey was the winning pitcher. She gave up eight hits over seven innings pitched. She struck out two and walked two.

Garrigan 8, CL 2
Timely hits eluded the Lions against Bishop Garrigan Friday night. The Golden Bears thwarted a fifth inning rally with runs in the sixth to seal an 8-2 win.
“Our girls really battled tonight for the win. We left several batters on base each inning,” said Coach Megan Young.
Tori Fyfe, Michala Ouverson and Chloe Mueller provided the Lions’ only hits in the game. Michala Ouverson picked up two RBIs. Michaela Niles and Erin O’Tool crossed home plat on Ouverson’s hit in the fifth.
Reagan Brackey had another great night. She had three walks and one strikeout. Garrigan struggled at the mound while having three hit batters, five walks and four strikeouts.
“We did have two fielding errors, matching Bishop. We were simply out-hit tonight,” said Coach Young.
