Jones fourth at State

Clear Lake’s Sam Jones finished fourth in the Class 1A boys State Tennis Tournament played in Waterloo Friday and Saturday.

After a pair of opening day wins on Friday, Jones, who was undefeated and the

number one seed in the tournament, dropped the semifinal round and third-place matches.

The Clear Lake sophomore was beaten in the semi-final match by eventual state champion Sam Stickles, of Maharishi, Fairfield, 6-4,  7-6 (7-5). Stickles finished third in 2013.
“It was a very high quality match,” said Clear Lake Coach Rich Peters.
Jones, who placed eighth at State last year, breezed through the first round and quarterfinals.
In the first round he topped Jeff Horak, of Waterloo Columbus, 6-0, 6-1. In the quarterfinals he downed Nathan Greiner, of North Polk, 6-0, 6-1.
Jones finished the year 23-2.
