Veterans propose memorial at Sea Wall

 Clear Lake City Council members indicated unanimous consensus Monday night for a plan to construct a veterans memorial at the Sea Wall, located across from the City Park Bandshell.

 

 V.F.W. Post Commander Mike Nelson, Past Commander Dave Parks and veteran Gene Madson, backed by about 20 veterans from the post, presented the Council with a conceptual drawing and discussed their vision for the project. The group said no City funds will be requested for the estimated $100,000 memorial, including lighting, landscaping and an irrigation system.
Madson explained RDG Design leader Marty Shukert, who has been instrumental in creating the blueprint for enhancements to the City Beach, Sea Wall and City Park areas, suggested and helped to design the proposed veterans memorial.
According to the plan, the current V.F.W. Memorial located on Main Avenue, near the Clear Lake Yacht Club building, will be moved to the Sea Wall site. The memorial would also include two additional flag pole piers for the American and state flags, as well as two five-foot walls which will have the names of veterans from Clear Lake and Ventura inscribed on them. Two additional walls could be added, if needed. Each wall can accommodate approximately 200 names of veterans from World War I, World War II, Vietnam, Gulf War and Korea, Madson said.
A small flower garden and water feature will also be part of the setting and would be tended by volunteers.
