CL girls golf team dominates at Class 3A Regional Gold Meet

The Clear Lake girls golf team dominated play at the Class 3A Regional Gold meet played Monday, May 19, at the Cresco Country Club.  The Lions returned to the clubhouse with a 375, easily outdistancing runner-up Independence with 399.  Both teams will advance to play Tuesday, May 27, at Independence for the chance to go to State.

The Lions were led by freshman Emily Snelling, who finished just one stroke back from medalist Savannah Lentz, of Crestwood.  Clear Lake’s Paige Backhaus had the third best score of the day at 88.

The remainder of the Regional field included: North Fayette Valley (414), New Hampton (418), Crestwood (422), Osage (437), Oelwein (449) and Waukon (466).

“In the conditions that we played in Monday, I couldn’t be happier with our scores,” said Coach Adam Brinkman.  “It was 40 mph wind at times and cold and rainy, and for us to shoot our lowest 18 hole round in it is a huge testament to the girls. They battled all day, and kept with it all 18 holes. The greens were very tricky with the conditions, and we were having a lot of three putts. The last few tournaments we have been losing some strokes around the greens,  but we are going to work a lot on our speed control and chipping this week and make sure we’re prepared in that aspect for the next round. Were moving on and thats all that matters right now. We’re looking forward to Independence.”

Also competing at Independence will be Dyersville Beckman and Camanche, which scored 366 and 410 respectively at the Regional played at West Liberty.
