The Clear Lake girls soccer team gave fourth ranked (2A) Waverly-Shell Rock a test, but dropped a 3-0 decision to the G-Hawks last week.  That was followed by a 1-0 loss at Aplington-Parkersburg.

An unfortunate penalty left the Lions short-handed throughout most of the second half, helping Waverly-Shell Rock build on a 1-0 halftime lead.  The Go-Hawks went on to win Thursday, May 15, by a score of 3-1.

“I feel we played extremely well against a team that is ranked fourth in the class above ours,” said Coach Nick DiMarco.  “We had an inadvertent hand ball in the goalie box that resulted in an automatic red card ejection. That left us playing most of the second half 10 versus  11.

The coach credited Madison Faber, Erin O’Tool,  Katie Hewett, and Trudy Peterson with tremendous play on defense, stopping attack after attack.

Ellie Biebesheimer was also great in goal with seven saves.

The Lions came out of the gate a little sluggish after the hard fought battle with Waverly the night before.

Aplington struck first, with a goal in the 15th minute of the first half.  Clear Lake nearly equalized the score on a number of occasions, but came away empty handed.

The second half started as the first had ended, with both teams playing excellent defense.

Clear Lake was the first team to strike in the second half.  Logan Anderson scored on a penalty kick in the 70th minute of the game. It appeared like the game was headed for overtime when AP snuck a ball between the defense and goalie Ellie Biebesheimer

Biebesheimer had five saves in goal during the match.
