GHV boys track team wins North Iowa Conference title

Winning the North Iowa Conference was a goal for the Garner-Hayfield/Ventura boys track team at the beginning of the season and Tuesday night, the team realized that dream.  The Cards won the title by a large margin with 154.50.  Forest City was second with 95 points and Belmond-Klemme and North Iowa tied for third with 70 points.

Three relay teams picked up first place finishes for the Cardinals.  The shuttle hurdle team of Sam Cataldo, Spencer Shaw, JJ Loschen and Zac Scholl won the race with a time of 1:01.74.  Also winning was the 4x400 team with a time of 3:45.41.  Members of the team included Ezra Marroquin, David Cook, Luke Wolf and Cataldo. The distance medley team of Logan Rohlfing, Conner Shaw, Nic Mehmen and Joel Toppin won their race in 3:50.34.

Nic Tusha won the shot put with a throw of 44’03.25”.  Adam Monson was second in the long jump with a jump of 19’5” and Braden Meints was third in the high jump, clearing 6’.

It was a GHV one-two punch in the 3200 meter run, with Logan Dalbeck winning the race in 11:08.65 and Derek Brown finishing as runner-up in 11:16.82.  The Cards also had two placings in the 400 meter hurdles, with Cataldo finishing second in 1:00.91 and Meints fourth in 1:03.53.

Adam Monson placed second in the 100 meter dash with a time of 11.49 and in the 200 meter dash, 23.47. Toppin also picked up runner-up honors in the 1600 meter run with a time of 4:49.32.  Mehman was second in the 400 meter dash with a time of 54.78.

“A focus of ours this year was team points.  We talked about doing your best and going for the team win.  The boys worked hard in practice and were eager to earn points for the team,” said Coach Kelsey Steffens.
