A win and a loss for GHV boys soccer team
The Garner-Hayfield/Ventura boys soccer team split two games in action last week.
Webster City 6, GHV 2
It was a tough night all around for the Cardinals when they hosted a ranked Webster City team on a cold, windy and rainy night Monday night.
“Webster City is a good team and we found ourselves playing against the wind in the first half,” said Coach Eric Williams.
The Lynx put in five of their six goals in the first half.
Despite being cold and tired, GHV put up a strong effort in the second half, scoring two goals and allowing Webster City only one goal.
Jack Bertilson had a strong game for the Cardinals, scoring both goals. Jimmy Ermer had one ssist.
Teddy Zrostlik had one shot on goal, while Allen Devora had one shot on goal, two shots and one assist. Bradon Meints also had one shot.
Goal keeper JJ Loschen had nine saves.
“I was proud of the boys to play hard and fight even though they were playing a ranked Class 2A team,” said Williams.
GHV 6, Humboldt 4
It was a much better night for the Cardinals when they traveled to Humboldt on Friday, May 16, to face the Wildcats.
“All year we have been stressing teamwork, not being selfish, controlling the ball and passing. I feel last night we finally put all that together,” said Coach Eric Williams.
Jimmy Ermer scored five minutes into the match on a nice pass from Patrick Terhark. Humboldt answered that goal with one of their own, and went on a run, scoring at the 24 and 32 minute marks. GHV found themselves in a 3-1 hole.
The Cardinals dug deep and Teddy Zrostlik scored on an assist from Jack Bertilson to bring the score closer, 3-2. At the 36 minute mark, Zrostlik had a corner kick to Shawn Murphy who found the back of the net to tie the score going into the half.
In the second half, Dalton Bassinger assisted Turner Albertson at the 50 minute mark to pull ahead, 4-3. Humboldt scored at the 53 minute mark to knot the score once again. At the 62 minute mark, Corey Houptman used his speed to get a break away and punched the ball, which was deflected off a Humboldt defender and went in the net.
With 10 minutes remaining in the game, Murphy had a strong throw that found Ermer on the back side for the winning goal, 6-4.
“I can’t say enough how it felt to get a win again. Our young men really deserved it and played extremely hard. They pushed hard and didn’t give up when they could have,” said Williams.
Zrostlik finished the game with two assists and two shots. Recording one assist apiece were Terhark, Murphy and Basinger. Murphy, Ermer and Terhark had one shot apiece, while Basinger had two shots on goal and Terhark had one shot on goal.
Goal Keeper JJ Loschen had 10 saves in the game.
