CL girls tennis team competes at Team Regionals
The Clear Lake girls tennis team concluded team play for the season at the Team Regionals held in Waverly Saturday, May 17. The Lions won their first round match-up against Grundy Center, but bowed out to host Waverly-Shell Rock in round two.
“Everyone stepped up today. It’s been a lot of fun to see the team do so well this year,” said Coach Mary Jo Peterson. The Clear Lake team has a record of 7-3. The Lions were slated to play one dual makeup match Tuesday, May 20, against Webster City.
Although team competition is done, the Lions will still compete at Individual Regionals Thursday, May 22, in Waverly.
CL 5, Grundy Center 0
The Lions blanked Grundy Center in the specially formatted team competition. Once a squad wins five matches, the meet is called. The Lions quickly won five matches for a 5-0 victory.
Alexis Atkinson was a 6-1, 6-1 winner in the number one singles match. Lindsey Loudenburg was at 6-5, 5-4 and on the verge of a win when the Lions’ fifth win of the meet occurred and so her match did not count in the team total. The remaining four victories came from Courtney Anderson (6-0, 6-1), Kirsten Jordan (6-1, 3-1 with opponent disqualified with injury), Hailey Grell (6-3, 6-4) and Reagan Brackey 7-6 (7-1 tiebreaker), 6-1.
W-SR 5, CL 0
Waverly-Shell Rock hosted the Lions at noon for a match played at W-SR High School.
“Waverly is an experienced team with very skilled players,” said Coach Mary Jo Peterson. “Despite the loss, the girls showed great improvement from the beginning of the season and never let up in their matches today.”
In each of their matches the Lions were able to capture at least one game from their opponent.
Lindsey Loudenberg was defeated, 6-3, 6-0; Courtney Anderson lost 6-3, 6-0. Kirsten Jordan lost 6-0, 6-1; Hailey Grell was topped 6-1, 6-0; and Reagan Brackey was stopped, 6-2, 6-1. Alexis Atkinson was down 6-2, 4-1, when the match ended because W-SR had won five games.
