GHV girls golf team wins NIC Meet

The spring weather has not been very cooperative for the Garner-Hayfield/Ventura girls golf team and Tuesday night’s North Iowa Conference meet was no exception.  The weather conditions were brutal with cold temperatures and strong northwest winds.

“Despite the weather, the girls showed great determination and played through it,” said Coach Todd Greiman.  “Even with the horrible weather, they posted their best nine hole score of the season.”

The team posted a 195 in the first round and ended with a 401 to win the meet.  Osage was second with 414 and Newman Catholic was third with 443.

Kyleigh Slaichert and Madee Hejna led the team with a second and third place finish respectively.  Slaichert shot a 94 and Hejna was right behind her with a 95.  Rounding out the score was Kim Dornbier with a 102 and Tamara O’Hara with a 110.  Whitney Watson shot a 116.

“Kyleigh and Madee both carded their best rounds of the year.  This is a great accomplishment after having to practice through some very challenging weather conditions during the past month,” said Greiman.  “They deserve a great deal of praise and credit.”

Forest City Tournament

The GHV girls recorded a strong front nine, but the back nine did them in at the Forest City Tournament.  The Cardinals finished in fifth place in the eight-team tournament with 413.  Charles City won the meet with 365, followed by Clear Lake with 387.

“This was a great opportunity to get experience on our first round regional course,” said Coach Todd Greiman.  “Bear Creek is clearly the most difficult course we’ve seen.”

The Cardinals recorded a 197, the second best nine-holes score of the season, but the back nine led to some big numbers.

“We also faced two of the top teams that we’ll see at regionals, so we now have a better idea of how we compare,” said Greiman.

Madee Hejna led the team, (48-47)95.  Kyleigh Slaichert wasn’t far behind (45-55)100.  Rounding out the score was Tamara O’Hara, (52-52)104 and Kim Dornbier, (52-62)114.  Also golfing were Elly Johnston, (56-61)117 and Whitney Watson, (59-63)122.
