Graduation Day memories
110 receive diplomas at CLHS
Ivy Hogg said she had intended to deliver a rather serious commencement speech, focusing on Lions and their pride and relating that to her class. Instead, she opened her Clear Lake High School commencement speech with a
spontaneous move-- she pulled out her smartphone, turned her back to her classmate audience and snapped a “selfie.”
“I thought the principal might be upset, but he wasn’t,” said Hogg after Sunday’s commencement. “I thought I would try to make it (the ceremony) a little more light-hearted and I thought it would work.” Not surprisingly, Hogg said that by Monday her self photo had received 260 “likes” on instagram-- her personal record.
Kirsten Reineke, the other senior chosen to deliver a commencement address, also put a personal touch on the ceremony. She composed a song, “My Parting Wish,” which was sung by the high school choir. She expressed thanks on behalf of the class for the education and guidance they received at Clear Lake and challenged each member to go out and “sing your own, unique song.”
