Lions give 3rd ranked W-SR run for the money

The Clear Lake boys soccer team advanced to the championship game and gave third ranked (2A) Waverly-Shell Rock all they could handle at the Waverly Soccer Tournament played Saturday, May 10. The title game was deadlocked a 0-0 after 60-minutes of play. The Go-Hawks eventually won the championship in a shoot out.

 “April 17th we played Waverly, losing 7-0.  Since that date our defense has been on lock down,” said Coach Matt Anderson. “This is our 8th consecutive contest (560 minutes of play) where my back linesmen of Garrett Kunzman, Chase Lester, Carter Hand, MJ Mixdorf, Jarod Anderson, Joe Schiller, Justin Sholly, and Jacob Welper have not given up a goal.  The defensive unit is doing everything I have asked of them and more.  Waverly Shell Rock is probably the best team in 2A soccer. Losing to them in a shoot out is not how we wanted to end our day, but it should certainly give the guys confidence we can play with anyone in the state.”
 The Lions, rated seventh in Class 1A, advanced to the finals with a 1-0 win over eighth rated (2A) Glenwood. Antonio DiMarco finished a header goal off a pass from Jack Abbas in the 57th minute of the contest to give the Lions the win. Jacob Hogan had five saves for Clear Lake.
  The second game in the tournament was against Iowa Falls.  Jarod Anderson scored the first goal of the match in the first minute of the contest.  DiMarco scored the second goal of the contest in the 26th minute to give the team a 2-0 win.  Hogan had three saves in the match.
 In the championship game, Hogan had four saves and was inches from having some great stops in the shoot out.
“This was Hogan’s second OT shoot out in four days,” noted Coach Anderson. “He’s doing a great job of making good reads and handling extremely stressful situations with poise and confidence.”
Soccer fans will have an opportunity to see the Lions at home this week. They host Humboldt Thursday, May 15.
