Cardinal boys place third in two track meets

The Garner-Hayfield/Ventura boys track team faced some tough competition in their first meet of the 2014 season.  The boys competed in the Umstead Relays in Eagle Grove on Tuesday, April 8.  The team placed third with 79 points.  Algona won the meet with 138 points, followed by Clear Lake with 103 points.

“It was great to record times, distances, and marks so we know where we are at as both a team and individually,” said first year Head Coach Kelsey Steffens.  “The boys should be proud of the third place finish; it was a great way to start the season.”

Claiming first place honors for the team was Joel Toppin in the 1600 meter run.  Toppin ran the race in 5:01.13.  Logan Dalbeck also claimed a top honor in the 3200 meter run with a time of 11:30.00.  The 4x100 meter relay team of Adam Monson, Conner Shaw, Spencer Shaw and Ezra Marroquin broke the tape with a time of 46.29.

The 4x110 meter shuttle hurdle team of Braden Meints, Spencer Shaw, Sam Cataldo and Zac Scholl placed second with a time of 1:04.41

Third place finishes went to Monson in the 100 meter dash with a time of 11.30; Mason Wirtz in the 3200 meter run with a time of 11:34.00.  The 4x200 meter relay team of Monson, Conner Shaw, Spencer Shaw and Marroquin finished the race in 1:38.20 for another third place finish.  Meints was the highest finisher in field events, placing third in the high jump with a jump of 5’10”.

GHV recorded third and fourth place finishes in the 400 meter hurdles.  Cataldo was third with a time of 1:02.42 and Meints was right behind him with a time of 1:02.94 for fourth place.

Marroquin, Nich Mehmen and Johnathan O’Connor all placed fifth in their respective races.  Marroquin ran the 200 meter dash in 24.40, while Mehmen ran the 400 meters in 55.95 and O’Connor clocked a 2:16.09 in the 800 meter run. - Read More via e-Edition
