GHV girls open track season at Wartburg Indoor Meet
Hard to believe that track season is here, but the Garner-Hayfield/Ventura girls track team has already competed in their first meet. The team competed at the Wartburg Indoor Meet on Tuesday, March 11.
“Getting on a track was exciting and so beneficial to our team,” said Coach Dyan Childress. “It gives us a chance to see where we’re at so we know what work needs to be done.”
Leading the team were two standouts from last season, Dasi Larson and Emily Mathews. Larson, who won the State championship last year in the shot put, threw 39’7” in the season opener, for second place. Mathews placed second in the 55 meter hurdles with a time of 8.72. She was third in the long jump with a leap of 15’ 10”.
The distance medley team of Taylor Vossberg, Mackenzie Van Gerpen, Maddie Tusha and Tiara Van Gerpen placed fourth with a time of 4:39.37.
“The distance medley team had an impressive overall time and excellent splits for this early in the season,” said Childress.
Other top 10 performances included Vossberg in the high jump with a fifth place finish. Stacy Hackenmiller placed 10th in the 55 meter hurdles with a time of 10.05. Rebekah Larson was eighth in the 3,000 meter run with a time of 12:55.78. The 4x800 meter relay group placed seventh with a time of 11:37.38. The team consisted of Tiara Van Gerpen, Tusha, Rachel Weaver and Ellie Meyers.
“I was happy with these early performances and times, but even more impressed by the competitive drive that the girls had. We were able to fill our entire line-up, which shows our depth this year,” said Childress.
