Marlyn E. Hall

Marlyn Eugene “Gene” Hall, 74, Clear Lake, formerly of Fertile, Iowa, died Wednesday, March 5, 2014, at the Oakwood Care Center, Clear Lake.

A funeral service for Gene was held on Saturday, March 8, 2014 at the Church of Christ, Fertile, with Pastor Rob Perry and Pastor Dennis Ganz officiating.  Burial was in the Grant Township Cemetery, Fertile.

The family would like to suggest that those wishing to give a memorial in his memory, may wish to direct memorials to the Church of Christ in Fertile.

Gene was born on March 28, 1939 in Mason City, the son of Glea and Mavis (Ouverson) Hall.  He received his education in the Fertile Community Schools, graduating from Fertile High School in 1957, and also graduated from Mason City Junior College with an AA degree in business.

Gene was united in marriage to Judith “Judie” Haugen on Aug. 23, 1959, and to this marriage four children were born, Tim, Tracy, Tami and Troy.  After their marriage, Gene worked for Northern Lumber, Great Plains Lumber, and Forest City Improvement Company, in Forest City and Klemme, before becoming co-owner purchasing the Fertile Lumber and Hardware Company in 1978 until his retirement due to ill health in 1997.

Gene enjoyed doing carpentry work with his sons and son-in-law, enjoyed helping others, watching sports, especially the Iowa Hawkeyes, and spending time with friends at the Apple Valley Assisted living.  But his great love and enjoyment was spending time with his family.

Gene was a very active and life member of the Church of Christ, Elder of the Church and Chairman of Board when they built the church, taught Sunday School for several years, and sang in the church choir.

Left to cherish his memory are his children, Tim (Patty) Hall, of Mason City, Tracy (Tammy) Hall, of Joice, Tami (Dan) Horner, of Clear Lake, and Troy (Trish) Hall, of Forest City; grandchildren, Christopher, Casey, Stephen and Andrew (Brittany) Hall, Samantha, Brady, Austin, and Hailey Horner, and Bethany, Nicholas, Logan, and Carsen Hall; one great-grandson, Paxten Hall; his brothers, Brian (Coralene) Hall, of Clear Lake, and Gary (Cheryl) Hall, of Lincoln, Ill.; his brother-in-law, Larry (Dixie) Haugen, of Clear Lake; several nieces, nephews, as well as many extended family members and friends.

Gene was preceded in death by his parents, Glea and Mavis Hall; wife, Judie on June 28, 2004; sister-in-law, Janan Haugen; and his father and mother-in-law, James and Esther Haugen.

Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel was in charge of arrangements.
