McChesney sworn in as Chief

Rex McChesney was sworn in as interim chief of the Clear Lake Police Department Monday night by Mayor Nelson Crabb.  The appointment of McChesney, a member of the department since 1986 and a lieutenant since 2006, is effective immediately.

After Police Chief Greg Peterson announced his retirement earlier this year, Mayor Crabb and City Administrator Scott Flory conducted interviews with applicants for the interim position.  McChesney was identified as Crabb’s recommendation for the post at the Feb. 10 Council meeting.

Crabb said he was appointing McChesney to serve as interim chief during a search for permanent department leadership.

“We expect the search to be community driven, with no time frame,” said Crabb.  “We are looking to get the best fit for the city and department, regardless of the time frame.  I have known Lt. McChesney for eight years as mayor and witnessed his devotion and commitment to the community.  He will provide stability and leadership to the department.”

Councilman Mike Callanan said he could not resist commenting on McChesney’s appointment.

“Some of the biggest rewards come down the road much later when we see former students rise to the level of leadership in families and communities,” said the former Clear Lake High School teacher.  “I am proud of home-spun products like Rex.”

Councilman Jim Boehnke also shared his congratulations with McChesney, who he said was a lifelong friend, growing up in the community together and serving together in various community groups.  “I think you will do a fantastic job,” he said.

On hand to watch as McChesney took an oath to serve the community as police chief was his wife, Jodie, many family members and friends, as well as Chief Greg Peterson, former Chief Dan Jackson and other retired officers.
