GHV girls roll over two North Iowa conference opponents

It was a very productive week for the Garner-Hayfield/Ventura girls basketball team, as they rolled over two North Iowa Conference opponents, bringing their record to 6-4 in conference play.

GHV 56, North Iowa 24

North Iowa (3-1, 4-5) couldn’t keep up with the Cardinals fast tempo game and GHV easily defeated the Bison, 56-24, on Tuesday, Jan. 7.

“We shot the ball well from the floor due in large part to the type of shots we were getting,” said Coach Matt Erpelding.  “Twenty of our 24 field goals came from in the paint.  We also forced 34 turnovers, of which 23 were steals which led to some

easy transition layups.”

GHV came out strong and put up 12 points in the first quarter, while holding North Iowa to only two points.  The Cardinals stretched the lead to 26-9 by halftime.

Early in the third quarter, the Cardinals started to get ahead of themselves by playing too fast, which led to several turnovers that the Bison capitalized on.  GHV scored 10 points in the third and North Iowa put in nine, for a 36-18 third quarter score.  The fourth quarter was all Cards, as they easily outscored the Bison, 20-6, for the final 56-24 victory.

Maddie Tusha had a great night on both offense and defense.  She was 7/12 from the field and was 3/6 from the three-point line, for a total of 17 points.  She also led the team in steals with nine and had three assists and four rebounds.

Mackenzie Haag also had a good game, with eight points, eight steals, four rebounds and two assists.

Rounding out the scoring was Shelby Rayhons with eight points, Mackenzie Van Gerpen added six, while Hannah Lau and Tiara Van Gerpen had five points apiece.  Sydney Younge contributed four points and Emily Spilman had three steals.

Spilman led the team in assists with four and she also had three steals.
