Clear Lake wrestlers move to 4-0 in NCC
A come-from-behind victory over Clarion-Goldfield Thursday keeps the Clear Lake wrestling team remains in first place in North Central Conference heading into the holiday break.
On the road at Clarion, the meet started at 145 and the Cowboys won the first three weights, opening up a 9-0 lead.
Birthday boy Logan Wilcke got the Lions on the board with a 2-0 win. Connor Nosbisch won by major decision, pulling the Lions to within 9-7.
A win at 195, a pin at 220 and another win at 285 put Clarion way out front at 21-7.
Brennen Doebel and Ryan Leisure closed the gap to 21-19 with four crucial matches left and Clarion having ranked wrestlers at 132 and 138.
Tanner Berger had a huge 3-2 win in his first varsity match ever to give the Lions a 22-21 lead. Spencer Orr trailed 4-1 before rallying and pinning his opponent in the third period. Ryan Faught lost a close decision to state ranked Joel Haberman.
Andres Gonzalez dismantled Clarion’s state ranked wrestler at 138, giving the Lions a hard fought 32-24 win.
In the second meet of the night, the Lions beat Pocahontas, 55-16.
Poky had ranked wrestlers at 106,120,152 and 160. They won three of those matches and lost the other 11.
Brennen Doebel was leading by 10 points when he pinned the sixth ranked wrestler in the state.
“Brennen is now ranked second in the state (2A) and deserves that accolade,” stated Coach Gary Weber, whose team is ranked fourth in Class 2A. Gonzalez is also ranked second at 138, Nosbisch is ranked fourth at 182 and Leisure is rated seventh at 113.
Other wrestlers winning against Pocahontas were: Leisure, Orr, Faught, Gonzalez, Blake Kelso,Wilcke, Nosbisch, Carter Garrington, Ace Walton and Mitchell Jordan.
Due to early holiday deadlines, results of Clear Lake’s performance at the Battle of Waterloo Friday and Saturday will appear in next week’s Reporter.
