The Garner-Hayfield/Ventura boys split a pair of conference games last week, moving their record to 3-2.
GHV 87, West Hancock 61
It was a successful night on the home court for the Garner-Hayfield/Ventura boys basketball team Tuesday, Dec. 10. Not only did the Cardinals beat West Hancock, they also set a new school record by making 37 free throws.
“I was most pleased with our free throw shooting. If we can continue to get to the line often, we can be successful,” said Coach Joe Albertson.
The Cardinals dominated the first half behind the hot hands of Joel Toppin and Braden Meints. By halftime, GHV led, 55-32.
“Braden and Joel got us going in the first half, but Luke Wolf and Holden Hutcheson led us in scoring in the second half with their play in the paint,” said Albertson. “I liked how we were able to run the floor in the second half, too.”
The scoring was closer in the second half, with the Cardinals scoring 15 points in the third quarter and the Eagles chipping in 16. GHV scored 17 points in the final period to West Hancock’s 13, for the final 87-61.
Four players scored in double figures for the Cardinals. Meints led the team with 23 points, followed by Toppin with 19. Wolf added 14 points and Logan Ryerson had 10 points.
Albertson praised the play of Ryerson, who was running the floor well and cleaning up the glass. He led the team in rebounds with 12 and he had three assists.
Other rebounding leaders included Meints with nine. Wolf and Hutcheson each grabbed six.
Spencer Shaw and Toppin led the team in assists with four apiece. Adam Monson grabbed two steals.
