GHV Cardinals place fifth at N-P Tournament
The Garner-Hayfield/Ventura wrestling team placed fifth at the Nashua Plainfield Tournament held on Saturday, Dec. 14. GHV scored 123 points in the 12-team tournament. Clarksville won the event with 232.5 points, followed by Nashua Plainfield with 228 points.
“I am very proud of how we wrestled today,” said Coach Steve Smith. “Placing fifth felt good because we are able to compete with other teams this year.”
Connor Shaw and Cade Baker led the Cardinal team by both placing second.
Shaw, at 152 pounds, opened the tournament winning by fall in both the first and second round, 1:14 in the first round and 5:40 in the second. He lost by a fall in the finals, 1:07.
Baker, at 170 pounds, won by a fall in the first round, 1:56, and won by decision in the second round, 11-4. He was pinned in the finals, 5:11.
Nic Tusha placed third at 220 pounds. He won the first round by fall, 1:38. He lost by fall in the second round, 3:34, but came back to win the third round by a major decision, 12-2, and the fourth round by fall in 2:33.
Connor Smith, at 195 pounds, also had a good day. He lost by fall in the first round, 2:40, but came back to win the second and third rounds by falls. The second round he won in 4:17 and the third in 1:58. He was pinned in the fourth round, 3:06, to finish in fourth place.
Austin Case, at 106 pounds, also placed fourth. He lost by fall in the first round, received a bye in the second round, won by fall in the third round and was pinned in the fourth round.
It was a fourth place finish for Austin Oborny at 120 pounds. He lost his first round by fall, 1:17. He came back to win the next two rounds by falls, 1:17 and :48. He was pinned in the fourth round, 1:44.
AJ Arnold, at 138 pounds, placed fifth with a record of 2-2. Placing sixth was Jacob Meier, at 113 pounds, and Colby Reid, at 145 pounds. Derek Brown, at 126 pounds, and Brady Baker, at 285 pounds, did not place.
