Board approves bringing drug dogs into high school
The Clear Lake School Board has given its unanimous approval to a request to bring drug dogs into the high school building.
CLHS Principal Chris Murphy told the Board the Clear Lake Police Department would like to
conduct a canine training exercise in the school. Multiple agencies and several dogs trained to detect narcotics may be used. Murphy told the Board a school administrator will accompany police during the training. If any illegal substances are found, any punishment would be determined by the school district.
“I think it’s a great working agreement between school and police department,” said Board member Chyrl Bergvig, former CLHS assistant principal and school counselor. “It’s long overdue.”
A formal agreement will be worked out with the police department. The training will then occur without notice.
In a related matter, the School Board also discussed the possible hiring of a resource officer who would be armed and in uniform. The officer, whose salary would be shared by the school district and the City of Clear Lake, would work between all school buildings. The Board said it will seek public response to the idea before pursuing it further.
Jeff Sheimo and Sterling Washburn, who have been leading the district’s maintenance/transportation and facilities departments since Transportation and Facilities Director Kelly McLaughlin left the position during the summer, were officially named as department -Read More Via e-Edition
