GHV volleyball team is a well-oiled machine

The Garner-Hayfield/Ventura volleyball team continued their winning streak with two more victories in recent action.

GHV 3, North Iowa 0

The Cardinals traveled to North Iowa on Tuesday, Sept. 10.

The Bison gave GHV some competition in the first two sets, with close scores of 25-18 and 25-22.  The third set, however, was all Cardinals.  They rolled to an easy 25-9 score.

“We struggled with our serve game, so it was great to see the fight, determination and focus to finish it in three,” said Coach Kelsey Steffens.

Senior Courtney Younge had an excellent night serving, racking up 19 points and four aces. She also led the team in assists with 23.  In addition to her assists, she also had two kills.

Shelby Rayhons also had a good night, serving up 11 points and collecting nine kills on 17 attempts.  She also had four digs.

Emily Mathews led the team in kills with 14 aces on 22 attempts.

Sydney Younge had three kills and three assists.

Defensive leaders included Mallory Van Oort and Miranda Frederick with five digs apiece.

GHV 3, Newman 0

A young Newman Catholic team was no match for the experienced, well-oiled machine that is the GHV volleyball team.  The Knights visited the Cardinal gym on Thursday, Sept. 12.

The Knights felt the pressure early in the first game, as the Cardinals jumped to a big lead behind a nine point run by Sydney Younge on the way to a 25-10 victory.

The score was knotted, 3-3, in the second match, before Emily Mathews picked up four straight points with her wicked jump serve to get the Cardinals rolling.  Newman was no match to GHV’s abundance of strong hitters and they fell, 25-13.

GHV strung together 22 consecutive points in the third game to capture an easy 25-4 win.

“Our focus this week was on defense and coverage of our hitters,” said Coach Kelsey Steffens.  “We were able to pass the ball into target areas, which allowed us to run a quick and aggressive offense.”

Mallory Van Oort led the team with a whopping 22 points from the service line.  Other leaders included Courtney Younge with nine points and Mathews and Sydney Younge with seven points apiece.

Hannah Lau led the team at the net with two blocks and nine kills on 13 attempts.  Mathews had three blocks and three kills on seven attempts, while Rayhons had three kills on 13 attempts.

Van Oort also led the team with seven digs, followed by Rayhons and Mathews with five and four digs respectively.

Courtney Younge led the team in assists with 15.

B-K Tournament

A tough Iowa Falls-Alden team kept the Cardinals from bringing home the championship at the Belmond-Klemme tournament held on Saturday, Sept. 14.  GHV went 3-2 at the tourney, with both losses at the hands of IF-A.

The Cardinals defeated #11 (2A) North Butler, 21-5 and 21-12 in the first game of the day.

“The girls came out ready to play and were able to keep the Bearcats on defense as things went well for us offensively,” said Coach Kelsey Steffens.

GHV faced Iowa Falls-Alden in the second pool play game.  The Cadets topped the Cards, 2-1.
