Two file nomination papers for at-large Council seat

Two candidates for an at-large position on the Clear Lake City Council filed nomination papers with the Clear Lake City Clerk on Monday, the first day to declare candidacy.

Peter Lagios and Gary Hugi are seeking the position being vacated by Terry Unsworth.  Unsworth, who also once served as the Ward 2 representative on the Council, announced last week he would not seek re-election.

Lagios was born in Mason City, has travelled extensively across the United States and returned to North Iowa in 2005 settling in Clear Lake.

  He said he views the democratic process as open for all, and wants to exercise his right to participate.  If elected, he said he wants to focus on improving the lives of Clear Lake residents first by addressing “a bothersome subculture of motorcycle, truck, and car enthusiasts who insist on keeping their tailpipes excessively noisy in residential and downtown areas.”  

“It’s quite insulting, is a form of harassment, and is actually against existing Iowa Code.  It’s time to require police to start enforcing the law,” he said.

He said he would also work to bring vocational training facilities and laboratories to Clear Lake that will help train youth and adults in relevant careers that are good for the long-term growth and stability of the community and state.  His other ideas also include giving tax rebates to households who grow food for themselves in personal or family gardens, and feels landlords should be required to offer tenants garden space if available, and tenants request it.  

Lagios said he enjoys making guitars, organic gardening, reading and writing, drinking coffee in his neighborhood coffee shop, and taking walks downtown.  

“Clear Lake is a nice place, and I will ensure that it stays nice and only gets nicer, by implementing policies that encourage good citizenship and domestic tranquility.”

Hugi is a retired construction manager who currently serves on the city’s Planning and Zoning Commission.  His other affiliations include: National Society of Engineering Technicians, North Iowa Builders Exchange (past president), Bell Harbor Association (past Board of Directors), Iowa Concrete Paving Association (past municipal and conference committees) and STEVLLA (founding member). - Read More Via e-Edition
