Cardinals top Eagles

 

The Garner-Hayfield/Ventura baseball team started the week off slow with two losses, but picked it up at the end of the week with a win over West Hancock, before dropping two games to Newman.

Algona 9, G-H/V 8

The Garner-Hayfield/Ventura baseball team was one run short of a win on Tuesday, June 11, at Algona.

It was back and forth scoring for both teams during Tuesday night’s matchup.  The Bulldogs got on the board in the third inning by scoring four runs, while G-H/V scored one.  The Cardinals kept pushing and closed the score to 7-5 at the bottom of the fourth.  The score was knotted at 8-8 at the end of the fifth inning, but the Bulldogs were able to push in one more run in the sixth inning to seal the 9-8 victory.

Heath Hutcheson led the offense with two hits, one being a double, scoring two runs and collecting one RBI.  Nathan Hrubes also had a good night with two hits, two runs scored and two RBI’s.

Spencer Shaw, Zach Buseman, Braden Meints and Josh Theobald also had two hits apiece.  Meints and Caleb Ploeger both smacked doubles for the Cards.  

Scoring one run each for the Cardinals was Shaw, Buseman, Meints, Jimmy Ermer, Ploeger and Keith Schwickerath.

Meints and Theobald also collected RBI’s for the team.

Nathan Hrubes and Heath Hutcheson both pitched.  Hrubes gave up six hits and seven runs.  He walked three and struck out three.  Hutcheson came in as relief pitcher and gave up five hits and two runs.

 

West Fork 10, G-H/V 4

The Cardinals hosted West Fork on Thursday, June 13.  The Warhawks dominated the game and came away with a 10-4 victory.

Josh Theobald took the loss.  He gave up six hits and six runs, walking one and striking out two.  Heath Hutcheson also saw action on the mound.  He gave up three hits and four runs.  He walked three batters and struck out two.

Spencer Shaw had the big bat for the Cardinals, collecting two hits, one of them a triple.  He also scored one of G-H/V’s four runs.  Zach Buseman connected for a double on one of his two hits and scored a run. Scoring the other two runs were Nathan Hrubes and Theobald, who also hit a double.

Keith Schwickerath connected on a double, which brought in two runners for the Cards.

 

G-H/V 12, West Hancock 7

It was a successful night on the road for the Cardinals when they topped West Hancock, 12-7, on Friday, June 14.

The game opened tight, with the score knotted at 5-5 after the third inning.  G-H/V took the lead after the fifth inning by scoring three runs to the Eagle’s one.  The seventh inning - Read More Via e-Edition
