G-H/V softball team picks up first win of the season
The week started off rough for the Garner-Hayfield/Ventura softball team, but it ended on a high note. The Cardinals dropped five games before picking up a win. The Cardinals record now stands at 1-11.
“We had a busy week of games and showed improvement throughout,” said Coach Christina Weiser. “We are getting great offensive production from the top of our batting order and continue to make
progress in all aspects of the game.”
Lake Mills 13, G-H/V 11
G-H/V gave Lake Mills a run for the money Monday night, June 3, but came up short in the 13-11 contest.
Both teams came out on fire, collecting six runs each in the first inning. The Bulldogs added three runs in both the second and third innings, while the Cardinals scored one run in the third and three runs in the fourth inning. Both teams scored one more run apiece to end the game.
Sydney Childress took the loss on the mound, but Brooklyn Ossman and Taylor Reising also shared in pitching duties. Childress and Ossman each gave up two hits, while Reising gave up five hits. Childress walked one batter, while Ossman and Reising walked three and five batters respectively. Reising struck out four batters.
Tiara Van Gerpen and Autumn Weaver each had three hits for the Cardinals, with Van Gerpen scoring twice and Weaver scoring once. Maddie Tusha and Grace Tusha each had two hits. Miranda Jackson, Mallory Van Oort, Mackenzie Van Gerpen and Payton Bamrick each had one hit.
Maddie Tusha and Weaver had two RBI’s apiece. Grace Tusha, Van Oort, Mackenzie Van Gerpen and Bamrick each had one RBI.
Osage 14, G-H/V 1
The Cardinals only managed one run in a tough game against Osage on Wednesday, June 5. The Green Devils defeated the Cardinals in four innings, 14-1.
Autumn Weaver scored the lone run for the Cardinals in the second inning.
Collecting one hit apiece G-H/V were Tiara Van Gerpen, Maddie Tusha and Weaver.
Brooklyn Ossman was the losing pitcher. She gave up five hits and 10 runs. She walked seven and struck out three. Sydney Childress also did some pitching, giving up four runs and three hits. She walked two and struck out two.
Rockford 10, G-H/V 1
Another day and another game for the Cardinals. They hosted Rockford on Thursday, June 6. Rockford walked away with a 10-1 victory.
Tiara Van Gerpen scored for the Cardinals on an RBI by Grace Tusha in the first inning.
Van Gerpen and Grace Tusha had two hits apiece, while Maddie Tusha, Mallory Van Oort and Miranda Jackson had one hit apiece.
Taylor Reising recorded the loss for G-H/V. She gave up 10 hits. She walked five and struck out three. Brooklyn Ossman also did some pitching, giving up two hits and recording one strikeout.
Forest City 18, G-H/V 8
The Cardinals hosted the Indians on Friday, June 7. Forest City romped G-H/V, 18-8, in the conference showdown.
