DNR battles spread of invasive species with boater education

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is reminding boaters and anglers to “Clean, Drain, and Dry” their boats and equipment to protect Iowa lakes and rivers from aquatic hitchhikers. 

Scott Grummer, DNR fisheries biologist based in Clear Lake, said two seasonal staff members are spending their summer conducting boat ramp interviews intended to increase knowledge of zebra mussels and other invasive species that have found their way into Clear Lake and threaten other waters. 

The push to educate, which has been going on for the past few years, is a prelude to a change in the law July 1.   

It is currently illegal to possess or transport prohibited aquatic invasive species in Iowa.  Starting July 1, it will also be illegal to transport any aquatic plants on water-related equipment.  Boaters must also drain all water from boats and equipment before leaving a water body and must keep drain plugs removed or opened during transport beginning July 1.  It is illegal to introduce any live fish, except for hooked bait, into public waters.
