Girls end season with a school best record of 10-4

The Clear Lake girls soccer team was eliminated from post-season in play in the Regional semi-final played Friday in Denver.   The Lions ended their record-setting season with a school best record of 10-4.  The team also set a record by allowing just 15 goals to be scored against them during the season.

CL 1, A-P 0

The Lions opened Class 1A Region 5 play with a 1-0 victory over Aplington-Parkersburg.  The game was to have been played Tuesday, May 28, was delayed until May 30 due to inclement weather.  The contest was moved form A-P to Fort Dodge, where artificial turf made it possible to play.

Logan Anderson carded the only goal of the game, scoring 10 minutes into the first half with an assist from Bailey Kibsgaard. 

After the score midfield and halfbacks from both teams went to work.   According to Coach Lothar Meyer, Clear Lake controlled the ball for approximately 70 minutes of the contest.  Sweepers Hannah Barlett, Summer Tannahill and Madison Faber, along with halfbacks Emly Willms, Emily Phalen and Megan Kopriva deterred the midfield all night, he said.

The Lions’ keeper, Riley Brinkman, recorded the shutout with three saves.  

On the other end, A-P’s goalkeeper was kept busy with eight shots on goal.

Denver 2, CL 1

Number 12 ranked (1A) Denver topped the Lions 2-1 in the Regional semi-final Friday at Denver.
