G-H/V girls drop two close soccer contests

The Garner-Hayfield/Ventura girls soccer team dropped two close contests last week.

Webster City 3, G-H/V 2

The Cardinals dropped a 3-2 heartbreaker to Webster City.

“I am so proud of how our girls kept their head up and left it all on the field,” said Coach Josh Banse.  “All the girls are playing very well as a team.”

Emily Spilman scored both goals, one in the first half and the other in the second half.  Renae Lau got the assist on the first goal and Tiara Van Gerpen got the assist on the second goal.

Banse also said it was a bonus having Maddie Tusha and Van Gerpen back fulltime after being gone for track, which was a real plus for the team.

Goalie Sam Betz had nine saves.

Spilman had eight shots on goal, while Mackenzie Haag had six and Bri Bier had three.

Mason City 3, G-H/V 2

It was another close game for G-H/V that failed to go their way, as they fell to Mason City on May 22, 3-2.

“Losing back-to-back games like this is tough, especially when it’s only by one goal late in the game,” said Coach Josh Banse.  “Most teams would be way down after a week like that, but this team is not and are still ready for a fight.”

Payton Bamrick scored the Cardinal’s first goal in the first half on an assist from Emily Spilman.  The second goal was scored by Bri Bier in the second half.

Goalie Samantha Betz had 15 saves.

Bier had three shots on goal, while Spilman had two.
