CL girls soccer team tops IF-A and G-H/V

The Clear Lake girls soccer team closed out the regular season with a 10-0 win over Iowa Falls-Alden Friday, May 17.  The victory improved the Lions’ record to a program-record best 9-3.

The match was halted with 13:03 remaining when CL senior Abby Woiwod scored with an assist from freshman Becca Bredlow.

“What a great way to have the last home match and regular season end,” said Coaches Lothar Meyer and Jerry Morris.  They added their thanks to parents and fans for their support thoughout the regular season.  “We’ll look forward to seeing the adjustments we  made tonight pay off in our first round at Aplington-Parkersburg on May 28 in the post season.”

Also scoring for the Lions against IF-A was Logan Anderson with four goals and an assist.  

“She was always seemingly following the ball into net,” said Coach Meyer.

Bailey Kibsgaard scored two goals and had four assists on the night after a slow start in the first half.

Megan Kopriva, trying for a hat trick, sent two shots into the net and had several close shots at goal.  Rounding out the scoring was Emly Phalen, with a midfield shot to net.

Riley Brinkmen saved only six shots in goal with Hannah Bartlett and Madison Faber working as sweepers.  Emily Willms was at the  center and Erin O’Tool was effective driving the ball to midfielders.  Keely Branstad, Madie Wendel  and Ellie Biebesheimer repeatedly relieved the midfielders and forwards in the match, according to the coach. 

“Our defenders did a nice job of adjusting with the rotation from the back.”

CL 7, G-H/V 1

The Lions rushed to a 6-0 first half lead and defeated Garner-Hayfield/Ventura 7-1 Monday, May 13.  

Mid-fielder Bailey Kibsgaard scored the first goal for the Lions just two minutes into the contest to get the Lions off to a fast start.  Next, Megan Kopriva and Logan Anderson combined for four more goals in 22-minutes and Emily Phalen came from the defensive side to mid-field to score again and finish the half with the Lions in control, 6-0.

G-H/V’s Mackenzie Haag scored the Cardinals lone goal 3:48 into the second half.

Anderson scored the last of the Lions’ seven goals in the 20th minute.

“Logan seemed to be at the right angle and location for several close shots in the goal with a light foot most of the night,” said Coach Lothar Meyer.  “It was a good night for her overall.”

Riley Brinkman had 11 saves at goal for the Lions.  G-H/V scored its only goal from the corner.

Clear Lake’s offense took 24 shots at goal in the game.  

Scoring assists were credited to Anderson, Kibsgaard and Hannah Bartlett.

Coach Meyer noted sweepers Summer Tannahill and Madie Faber kept most attempts back to the midfielders.

“It was nice to get  playing time in for all the  players and control the ball, due to the defensive side of the match,” added Coach Meyer.

For G-H/V, Haag and Jesslyn Prohaska had three shots on goal apiece.

Sam Betz had 12 saves for the Cardinals, while Emily Brown had one save.

“Our girls get better every time they play Clear Lake,” said Coach Josh Banse.   “Clear Lake is a very strong offensive team, Sam Betz had her hands full and did a great job.”

  The team begins tournament play on Tuesday, May 28, at Aplington-Parkersburg.
