Tiebreaker decides winner at NCC Tourney
On the strength of a tiebreaker, the Clear Lake boys captured the North Central Conference Tournament Monday at Veteran’s Memorial Golf Club in Clear Lake.
The Lions and St. Edmond each finished with a team score of 319, but the use of the fifth best score for each team, gave the Lions the title. Treslyn Allison’s score of 84 was the difference.
Clear Lake senior Shawn Snelling had his best round since 2011 and finished in a three way tie for first with a score of 77. A bogey on the first play-off hole made him the NCC Tournament runner-up. Medalist honors went to Colton Schnetzer, of Humboldt.
Behind Snelling’s 77 was Jon Carew with a 79, Tommy Schick with 81 and Austin Rurup with 82.
“It was the most competitive NCC tournament in all my years of coaching,” said Clear Lake Coach Eric Perry. “Realistically, seven teams had a shot at winning the title. It looked as if we would be mid-pack, until Jon Carew came in with a back nine of 36 to give us hope. Then Shawn came through in a big way with another 36 giving us a shot. It wasn’t until we had our fifth score tiebreaker before we knew we won.”
