G-H/V girls host Cardinal Relays

 

The weather finally cleared enough to let the Garner-Hayfield/Ventura girls track team compete.  The Cardinals hosted 14 schools on Tuesday, April 16.  The Cardinals competed in Class A, where they placed fifth in the eight team competition.  Eagle Grove won the Class A division with 107 points.

“It was great to finally have a chance to compete,” said Coach Dyan Childress.  “We now have an idea of where we are at and where we need to go.”

Dasi Larson started things off strong in the field events with a first place finish in the shot put.  Larson tossed the shot 40’7.5”  Larson qualified for the Drake Relays in this event.  She competes on Friday, April 26 at 8:30 a.m.  She enters the relays with the fourth best throw in the state.

“Dasi is continuing to throw well and we’re anxious to watch her down at Drake,” said Childress.

Emily Mathews captured another first in field events in the long jump with a leap of 15’5.5”.   

The shuttle hurdle team of Mathews, Stacy Hackenmiller, Lizzy Henley and Sola Stephenson had a successful night finishing in first place with a time of 1:12.01.

“The shuttle hurdle team was excited about their fast time this early in the season.  With limited time over the hurdles so far, we’re excited about taking even more time off once the weather cooperates,” said Childress.

Mathews’ hurdling abilities came through again with a first place finish in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 15.92.

Picking up third place finishes for the Cardinals were Stephenson in the long jump, 14’5”; the distance medley relay team of Taylor Vossberg, Sydney Childress, Courtney Prescott and Rachel Weaver, 5:00.99; and the sprint medley relay of Vossberg, Childress, Stephenson and Prescott, 2:09.60.

The team travels to North Union on Thursday, April 25.
