Lions top MC in boys soccer action

It took a bit to get going, but when they did the Clear Lake boys soccer team rolled past Mason City 5-1 Monday night, April 8.

Mason City scored the first goal of the contest in the 11th minute of the first half and that score stood until Clear Lake’s Antonio DiMarco tied the contest in the 25th minute on a penalty kick.  

In the 32nd minute, the Lions’ Jack Finn placed a corner kick to center field and found DiMarco for a header goal, putting the Lions up 2-1.  At the 37th minute, Zach Zwiefel played the ball to Finn for the final goal of the half, 3-1.  

At the 50th minute, the Lions converted a double assist for a goal.  Brice Wilcke got control of the ball just past middle field and crossed to Karlen Lu.  Lu passed the ball to DiMarco, who converted the pass for a hat trick goal.  

The final score of the contest came in the 67th minute.  Finn collected another assist when he found DiMarco for his fourth goal. Goal keeper Bryson Hamilton had two saves during the contest.  

“It seemed to take us a while to get things clicking.  With only two outdoor practices prior to this contest, I was not surprised by a slow start,” said Lions Coach Matt Anderson.   “As a team we have several boys adjusting to new positions.  As the game continued they seemed to find a comfort zone and played better as a group.  There are many things to improve on but over all it was a nice win.”

This week the Lions host Garner-Hayfield/Ventura on Thursday and Humboldt on Friday.  Both contests are set for 5:30 kick-offs.

JV Soccer

The Clear Lake and Mason City junior varsity soccer teams played 60-minutes of scoreless soccer Monday night.

“The match was an exciting contest, with both teams making good runs and shots on goal,” said Coach Nick DiMarco.

The Lions outshot the Mohawks, 9-4.  Freshman Bryce Schmalen was in the box for the Lions and did a strong job of stopping some solid Mason City attacks.  Joe Schiller, Thai Phaiboun, and Jacob Welper led the defense, while Jared Anderson and Mitch Camphu helped attack the net with seven and two on-goal shots respectively.   The Lions play again on Thursday, April 11, at home against Garner-Hayfield/Ventura.
