Clear Lake girls ranked 14th in Class 4A

The Lions got back on the winning track last week with victories over Bishop Garrigan and Eagle Grove.  The team is now 14-4 overall heading into the final week of the regular season. This week the team will be at Humboldt Thursday and Charles City Saturday. The Lions, ranked 14th in Class 4A, open post-season play Feb.16 at home.  Clear Lake received a first round bye; they will host the winner of the 

Decorah vs. Charles City game which will be played Feb. 14 at Charles City.

CL 58, Garrigan 36

Junior Trudy Peterson had her best game of the season, scoring 26 points and leading the Lions to a 58-36 victory over Bishop Garrigan Tuesday, Jan. 29.   Peterson had a hot hand, sinking nine of 13 field goal attempts and going four for six from beyond the three-point arc.  She also dropped four of five free throws on her shooting rampage.

Megan Loux also finished in double figures with 10 points.  Bailey Kibsgaard put in seven for the Lions, Logan Anderson had six and Kristen Hewett put in three points.  Emily Phalen, Kaitlyn Pitzen and Lindsey Loudenburg finished with two points apiece.  

The Lions were able to break open the one-point game in the second quarter by outscoring Garrigan 18-5.  It was more of the same in the third, as the Lions held the Golden Bears to nine points while putting in 19.  

Pitzen pulled down six rebounds to lead the team and three others grabbed five boards-- Peterson, Anderson and Kaye Faber.  Hewett nabbed four rebounds and Loux had three.

“We are shooting the ball with a lot of confidence,” said Coach Bart Smith.  “I am mostly impressed with how well our girls are sharing the ball.  If someone is making their shot our girls do a nice job of getting the ball to that girl.  If we can continue to shoot the ball with that confidence and continue to play tough defense we will be a strong team going into tournaments.”

CL 57, Eagle Grove 19

The Lions started fast and never looked back in a dominating win over Eagle Grove Friday, Feb. 1.  The Lions led 33-6 at the half on their way to a 57-19 victory.

The strong performance allowed Coach Bart Smith to give his roster valuable playing time.  

Bailey Kibsgaard and Trudy Peterson led the way for the Lions with 16 and 14 points respectively.  Kibsgaard had one of her best outings on both ends of the floor, shooting 7/8 from the field and grabbing a team-high six rebounds.  The junior also topped her team in steals with four.  As a team, the Lions recorded 15 steals in the game.

Megan Loux chipped in eight, Kaitlyn Pitzen had six and Kristen Hewett five points.  Logan Anderson and Madison Faber each put in three points, while Lindsey Loudenburg got into the record book with a fieldgoal.
