A week of ups and downs for Cardinals

The Garner-Hayfield/Ventura boys basketball team had a week of ups and downs. The Cards picked up two wins, but dropped a disappointing game to North Iowa.  Their record now stands at 13-4.

G-H/V 60, Osage 50

Balanced scoring was key to G-H/V’s win over Osage on Tuesday, Jan. 22.  The Cardinals had four players score in double digits.

The game was a battle of two halves.  The Green Devils came ready to play and managed a 25-18 lead by halftime.

The coach’s halftime talk must have been a good one.  The Cards came back and fired in 22 points in the third quarter, turning a six point deficit into a nine point lead in the last four minutes.  The fourth quarter was more balanced, but G-H/V prevailed, 60-50.

“It was nice to see the boys seal the deal by knocking down 12 fourth quarter free throws,” said Coach Joe Albertson.  “Joel Toppin and Heath Hutcheson have shown great poise and leadership, knocking down many important free throws this season.”

The Cardinals in double digits were Toppin with 16, Braden Meints with 14 and Spencer Shaw and Hutcheson both had 12 points apiece.

Meints led the team under the boards, hauling in nine rebounds.  Hutcheson grabbed five, while Toppin pulled down four.

Meints also led the team in steals with three.  Shaw and Alex Van Gerpen had two steals each.

North Iowa 57, G-H/V 38

There wasn’t much that went right for G-H/V Friday night when North Iowa came to town and dealt the Cards a powerful blow.

The baskets just wouldn’t fall for the Cardinals and they managed only 11 first half points.  The Bison, on the other hand, weren’t having any problems in the offensive court.  They racked up 30 first half points.

It wasn’t until the bench came in for the fourth quarter that the Cardinals were able to put up some points.  Josh Theobald rained down two three-pointers and Logan Ryerson had one to get G-H/V more points -Read More Via e-Edition
