Win streak continues for G-H/V girls

The Garner-Hayfield Ventura girls stretched their winning steak to five with three more wins last week, moving their record to 11-6.

G-H/V 39, Osage 34

The G-H/V girls learned that playing hard all 32 minutes of a game leads to victories.  

“We played very well.  There were no three or four minute spans where we lost our composure or failed to execute like we needed to,” said Coach Matt Erpelding. 

Coach Erpelding admitted that not everything was perfect Tuesday night.  He said the team shot the ball very poorly from the field at only 25 percent, but solid defense and great free throw shooting allowed them to stay in the game.  The team was 10/10 from the charity line, and went 6/6 late in the game.

It was two evenly matched teams that took the floor.  The scoring was balanced until the third quarter, when the Cardinals managed to pull ahead 30-27. Great defense and key shots helped the Cards pull off a 39-34 win.

“I’d like to praise the play of Hannah (Hutcheson), who led us offensivley and knocked down several timely shots for us.  Also, Shelby (Rayhons) who did a good job guarding their post and keeping her from getting the ball where she wanted it,” said Erpelding.

Hutcheson finished the night with 15 points.  Mackenzie Haag was the second leading scorer with nine.

Maddie Tusha led the team in rebounds with 11 and in steals with seven.

Bri Bier grabbed six rebounds and led the team in assists with four.

G-H/V 44, North Iowa 37

It was another nail-biter for G-H/V fans on Friday night.  The Cardinals hosted #10 ranked North Iowa.

“This was a very tight, hard fought game with both teams making multiple spurts throughout the game in a battle for the lead,” said Coach Matt Erpelding.

Evenly matched play led to a halftime score of 18-18.  The Cardinal’s half court defense caused the Bison problems.  G-H/V’s tough D held North Iowa scoreless for the first four minutes of the second half, allowing the Cards to pull ahead by six.  The Bison kept fighting and they cut the lead to two by the end of the third quarter, 27-25.

With less than three minutes to play, the Cardinals fell behind by two.  Tiara Van Gerpen used her speed to grab two steals that she converted into four points for the lead.   Maddie Tusha and Emily Spilman sealed the win by both knocking down two free throws.

Bri Bier had a great night for the Cardinals, collecting 14 points, four rebounds, one assist and two steals.
