Officials rescue teen from car going through lake ice

Emergency crews rescued a Clear Lake teen Thursday night after the vehicle he was driving partially went through the ice while driving on the lake.

According to the Cerro Gordo County Sheriff’s Department, 17-year-old Ryan Thornton was driving a  2002 Volkswagon Passat on the ice in the vicinity of the channel between the “little lake” and “big lake” about 9:45 p.m. Thursday when the vehicle broke through the ice and became partially submerged.

The Ventura and Clear Lake fire departments, Clear Lake police, and the Iowa Department of Natural Resources were dispatched to McIntosh State Park.   Ventura Fire Department members went onto the ice and assisted  Thornton, the only occupant, out of the vehicle. No injuries were reported.

The vehicle was left out on the ice until daylight Friday, when it was pulled from the lake.
