Girls battling for a top spot

The Lions notched two more wins on their belt last week and remained in the conference race with victories over Webster City and Hampton Dumont.  The team is now 10-3 overall and 9-2 in the North Central Conference.  Fort Dodge St. Ed’s sits atop the league standings heading into the final two weeks of the conference season with a 12-2 mark.  Clear Lake and and Hampton-Dumont are both at 9-2 and Algona and Iowa Falls-Alden are both at 8-4.  The Lions are slated to travel to St. Ed’s Friday, Jan. 25, to take on the NCC leaders.

Defense is sometimes the best offense-- and that was the case for the Clear Lake girls against Webster City Tuesday.

“We have been struggling to shoot the ball lately, but with the defensive pressure we put on teams it has allowed us to grind out some wins lately,” said Lions Coach Bart Smith.  “We need to start shooting the ball better if we want to stay in the conference race.”

The coach said the goal for his team has been to hold their opponent to single digits for two quarters of the game.  Against Webster City, the goal was met and exceeded.  

The Lions jumped out to a 15-8 lead in the first quarter, then shut down the Lynx scoring.  Webster City managed just two points in the second quarter and four in the third.  The Lions built their 29-10 halftime lead to 39-14 after three periods.  The gap allowed Coach Smith to give all of his players valuable floor time on the way to the 49-30 win.

Logan Anderson had 13 points to lead the Lions and shared a team-high five rebounds with Kristen Hewett, who scored seven.  Trudy Peterson also chipped in seven points.  Madison Faber finished with six points, while Kaitlyn Pitzen had five and Bailey Kibsgaard scored four.  Megan Loux added three points and dished out - Read More Via e-Edition
