Grapplers take 3rd in NCC Tourney

The Clear Lake wrestling team placed third Saturday in the nine-team North Central Conference tournament. Humboldt won the tourney, followed by Webster City. 

  The Lions did claim three titles.  Ryan Schmalen, Ryan Faught and Andres Gonzalez all came home as NCC champions. 

Carson Farmer made it to the finals in dramatic fashion, with a double overtime win in the semi finals. 

“We had a good day.  The kids are listening to our coaching staff and perfecting their style just in time for Sectionals.  It should be an exciting stretch run,” added Coach Weber.

106: Ryan Schmalen, first place.  Ryan had a great day. He is primed to have a great finish to his season.

113: Brennen Doebel, third.  Brennen went 3-1, with his only loss to the fourth ranked wrestler in state.  He is figuring out how to wrestle bigger kids and is doing awesome.

120: Ryan Faught, first place.  Only five wrestlers have won four NCC titles in the 50 years of the NCC tourney and Ryan has put himself in a position to do that.  He had a great overtime win in the finals to become a NCC champion.

126: Spencer Orr, fourth place.  Spencer is wrestling with a lot of heart and is having a great year.

132: Andres Gonzalez, first place.  Andres pinned all three of his opponents and scored the maximum 26 points for our team.  He looked extremely good and is ready to make his title run.

138: Carson Farmer, second place. Carson has been battling the injury bug, but he put that out of his mind on Saturday and had a great day.  He beat the Clarion wrestler who he lost to 9-1 earlier in the year.

145: Aaron Boeshart, fifth place. Aaron is so close to getting to the next level. We believe he will get there next week at Sectionals.

152: Blake Kelso, fifth place.  Blake is light for his weight class and is simply facing stronger opponents.  He is one of our hardest workers in the room right now and that will pay off.

160: Logan Wilcke, fifth place.  Logan had three ranked wrestlers at his weight and wrestled very admirably Saturday. He beat a very good St. Ed’s wrestler and wrestled hard all day.

170: Connor Nosbisch, third place.  Connor beat state ranked Josh Bauer, of Hampton, and had an outstanding tournament.  I believe he can get on the podium at state.
