Lion wrestlers beat #9 Osage following a 30-30 tie

The Clear Lake wrestling team pulled off a big upset Saturday, beating ninth ranked Osage on criteria.  The meet ended up in a 30-30 tie, but the Lions had three pins to Osage’s two and were awarded the win.

“Any win is big, but to beat the ninth ranked team in their gym was really something special for the boys on Saturday,” said Clear Lake Coach Gary Weber.  “The entire team wrestled well and it shows how good we can be if we stay off our backs.”

The coach noted he was especially pleased with Levi Pinheiro, who came away with a big 8-4 win in his first-ever varsity match.

The Lions lost three duals on the day at the Osage meet, but they were to number two ranked Davenport Assumption, 38-21; Independence, 33-24; and to the second ranked team in Minnnesota, Kasson Mantorville. Kasson is ranked 18th in the United States.

“We actually wrestled very, very well on Saturday.  We have an extraordinary schedule so we do not measure our success in wins and losses,” added Weber.

Ryan Schmalen (106), Brice Wilcke (170) and Connor Nosbisch (182) all went 3-1 on the day, with their only loss coming to state ranked opponents.

Here is a recap of the day, provided by the coach:

106: Ryan Schmalen, 3-1. Ryan had a great day, beating three ranked opponents. The Lions were losing to Osage, 30-27, and Schmalen beat the seventh ranked wrestler, Tristin Johnson, 7-2 to tie the score 30-30 and give the Lions a win.

113: Brennen Doebel, 0-4. Brennen actually wrestled pretty well, we just had great competition.

120: Ryan Faught, 2-2. Ryan is having a great year and we now know he needs to work against the cradle and finish some single legs.

126: Spencer Orr, 1-3. Spencer lost to three ranked opponents and battled hard. We were proud of his effort.

132: Andres Gonzalez, 2-2. Andres moved up to 138 to help the team for one of his losses and the other was to last year’s state runner up. He is doing fine and now once he gets into the flow of competition and making weight, he will be just fine.

138: Sam Lakose, 1-3. Sam moved up to 138 and only weighs 132 to fill in for the injured Carson Farmer. He did fine.

145: Aaron Boeshart, 2-2. Aaron is listening and perfecting his technique and it is showing up as wins. He had a big win against Osage.

152: Blake Kelso, 1-3. Blake had a nice win against a good Independence wrestler. He, too, showed improvement on Saturday.

160: Logan Wilcke, 1-3. Logan won a big match against Indy and fought hard on Saturday. We were pleased.

170: Brice Wilcke, 3-1. Brice beat another ranked wrestler from Independence. He is having a great year.

182: Connor Nosbisch, 3-1. Connor is now wrestling with a lot more intensity and is doing much better. He had three big wins and a huge pin against Osage to help with - Read More Via e-Edition
