Cardinals fall to Forest City; top Newman Catholic

It was a week of ups and downs for the Garner-Hayfield/Ventura boys.  They dropped a hard fought battle against Forest City, but pulled off a close one with Newman Catholic.

Forest City 56, G-H/V 40

Coming into the game, the Garner-Hayfield/Ventura boys knew Forest City was a quality team capable of creating turnovers and hitting threes.  The Indians lived up to their reputation, as they topped the Cardinals, 56-40, on Tuesday, Jan. 8.

G-H/V had a hard time finding their momentum early in the game, but after a couple of threes from Zach Buseman and Joel Toppin, the team found their groove.  The Cards had the lead, 18-13, following the first quarter and still maintained a three point lead, 28-25, by halftime.

The Cardinals had a hard time knocking down the perimeter shot in the second half, and Forest City found ways to score.  The Indians outscored G-H/V, 10-6, in the third and continued their dominance in the fourth quarter by outscoring the Cards, 21-6, for the final score, 56-40.

“Plain and simple, we allowed too many extra chances for Forest City to score, and they made us pay for it,” said Coach Joe Albertson.

Toppin led the team with 13 points, followed by Bradon Meints and Buseman with nine points.  Both Toppin and Buseman connected on three, three-point shots.  Rounding out the scoring was Heath Hutcheson with five and Spencer Shaw and Jake Wolf with two points apiece.

Rebound leaders included Meints and Alex Van Gerpen with six apiece.  Austin Kropp grabbed five and Wolf had four rebounds.
