Girls come out on top of close battles

The Clear Lake girls pushed their record to 7-2 with a pair of wins coming off of the holiday break.  The Lions won close battles with Algona and Forest City.

Coach Bart Smith called the Lions’ win at Algona Friday the “biggest win of the season” for his team.

“Our girls battled back after a slow start and did the 

right things to get back into the game,” said Smith.  “I was pleased to see us take care of the basketball.  It was a good way to start off the Christmas break.”

The win keeps the Lions in the hunt for the North Central Conference title.  St. Ed’s leads the league with a 9-1 mark and Hampton-Dumont is 7-1.  Clear Lake stands at 6-2, followed by Algona at 6-3 and Iowa Falls-Alden at 5-3.  The Lions will be at Iowa Falls Friday for a key NCC game.

Algona jumped out to an 18-6 lead in the first quarter, but Clear Lake’s defense made needed adjustments and held the Bulldogs to only two points in the second quarter.  Algona held a 20-14 advantage at the half.

Solid defensive play continued in the second half and provided the win for the Lions.

Bailey Kibsgaard had her best outing, leading the team with 14 points and five rebounds.  

“Bailey Kibsgaard had a good game for us.  Megan Loux and Logan Anderson are doing a nice job getting to the lane and finding Kibby in the post,” noted Coach Smith.

Anderson put in nine points, as did Trudy Peterson.  The players had four and five rebounds respectively.  Kristen Hewett finished with five points, five rebounds and had a blocked shot.  Loux scored two points.

CL 42, Forest City 38

The Lions’ defensive prowess continued in a non-conference game with Forest City the next day.  The Lions again started slow, but outscored the Indians 15-5 in the second quarter for a 25-17 lead at the half.
