Balanced scoring leads to G-H/V win

A balanced scoring attack and a decrease in turnovers helped the Garner-Hayfield/Ventura girls basketball team pick up a win over Lake Mills on Friday, Jan. 4.

“It is very difficult to stop a team when they have balanced scoring from more than two girls,” said Coach

 Matt Erpelding.  “We have so many girls that are capable of putting up big numbers offensively.”

Bri Bier, Hannah Hutcheson and Emily Spilman all scored in double digits for the Cardinals.   

The team came out on fire and posted a huge first quarter lead, 12-5.  The second quarter saw more balanced scoring.  By halftime, the Cardinals held a 22-16 lead.  The Bulldogs picked it up following the half and outscored G-H/V 16-13 in the third quarter.  The Cards outscored Lake Mills, 18-16, in the fourth quarter for the final 53-48 victory.

“Our decrease in turnovers and our free throw and field goal percentages also improved this game,” said Erpelding.  “We are also finally healthy as a team and now have everyone back at practice, so I think you will see us continue to improve as we get into more of a comfort zone in terms of playing as a team.”

The Cardinals only committed 13 turnovers compared to their usual average of 20.  The team also shot 65 percent from the free throw line, all combining for 14 more points than the team has been averaging.
